Southern Alberta woman to face trial this fall for allegedly trying to mail pets

Apr 27, 2022 | 4:49 PM

VULCAN, AB – Trial dates have been set for a woman charged with causing an animal to be in distress.

Jill Heather Marshall, 56, was arrested in June 2019. She is from the Village of Milo in Vulcan County, approximately 130 kilometres north of Lethbridge.

Vulcan County Enforcement Services reported that a puppy and kitten were found in a cardboard box at a local Canada Post office.

The box had postage and a destination address, and the animals had stamps stuck to their heads.

The next week, a similar box was dropped off with a puppy inside.

The three animals were unharmed and taken to the Calgary Humane Society.

The Canada Post website says live animals cannot be mailed unless the sender has entered a related agreement with Canada Post prior to mailing.

Bees, day-old chicks and hatching eggs, parasites, leeches, and some other small cold-blooded animals can be mailed under certain conditions.

Marshall will face a trial in Lethbridge Provincial Court on Sept. 6.
