Prosecutors want four with ‘conspiracy to commit murder’ charge to have joint trial

Apr 25, 2022 | 2:30 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lawyers are trying to move ahead with the matters for four people who were charged as part of the Coutts border blockade in January and February.

An attorney appearing as agent for Christopher Lysak appeared in Lethbridge Court of Queen’s Bench on Monday.

She was looking to set trial dates for Lysak, who is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, uttering threats, possession of a weapon, and mischief to property over $5,000.

Crown prosecutors, however, want to first join Lysak’s matter with three others who face the same conspiracy to commit murder charge – Chris Carbert, Anthony Olienick, and Jerry Morin.

The four were among a group arrested on Feb. 14 in connection with the blockade near the Coutts border crossing.

The difficulty at this stage, though, is that the other three are still appearing in Lethbridge Provincial Court and have yet to have bail hearings. This means that the files for the four would not be able to be joined together until they are all brought to Queen’s Bench.

Lysak was denied bail on March 2, and indicated during an appearance on April 11, that he wants his matter to proceed quickly. He previously waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

The next scheduled date for Lysak is May 9. It is the hope of the court that progress can be made on the other three matters before then.
