Risk of grass fires high to extreme

Dry conditions could result in another Cypress County fire ban

Apr 25, 2022 | 5:12 PM

Officials with Cypress County are hoping for rain.

They say the risk for grass fires is high to extreme in the area, and they’re watching conditions daily in the event a fire ban is needed.

Deputy fire chief John McBain says that wildfire season has already been underway in the region for a few weeks.

A small amount of moisture recently has helped create less dry conditions somewhat, but McBain says there’s still a strong possibility of another fire ban in the area in the coming weeks.

He says warm weather and high winds also factor into dangerous conditions.

“Temperatures next week (are) looking at in that 12 to 16 (degree) range. But y’know, if we were to get into that 20 to 25 (degree) range and we see some extremely high winds I could definitely see a fire ban being looked at.”

McBain says Cypress County has banned campfires and burning barrels as early as March in previous years.
