MEDICINE HAT, AB – A fundraising dinner for the Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner Conservative Association on Monday night will feature the perceived frontrunner to be the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

MP Glen Motz has thrown his support behind Pierre Poilievre, who he says is head and shoulders above the others in the race.

He says the majority of people he’s spoken to in the riding support Poilievre.

“They like his economic policies, they like his direct, his directness in his speech, he’s articulate, he’s clear and concise in his language he’s not afraid to say what needs to be said,” Motz says. “And like I said his economic policies are sound, his ability to communicate what he’s trying to say to Canadians resonates with people. He is from western Canada, that makes a big difference to folks.”

When deciding who to support, Motz says it came down to who can win the right side of conservatives and the centre of the country and who can win the next general election. He says Poilievre checks those boxes.

“I think he’s an individual who can bring Canadians together, who can unite Canadians behind a policy about government getting out of the way, letting Canadians be free to manage their lives and ending the bureaucracy that bogs people down,” Motz says.

Motz says he and Poilievre were planning a fundraising dinner before the leadership race was called, and the added importance of the dinner is a nice boost.

Motz says ticket sales for the dinner were fantastic in Medicine Hat, the rest of the riding, and the surrounding area, and there will be about 550 people in attendance at the sold-out event .

The deadline for candidates to enter the leadership race is April 19. The party will announce its new leader on Sept. 10

There are six people listed as candidates on the party’s website: Scott Aitchison, Roman Baber, Patrick Brown, Jean Charest, Leslyn Lewis and Poilievre.
