April is Speed Awareness Month in Alberta

Apr 11, 2022 | 2:40 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Alberta RCMP want to remind drivers about the dangers of speeding, especially as the weather begins to get warmer and roads start to clear.

April marks Speed Awareness Month in the province.

The Alberta government’s traffic safety plan calendar highlights different traffic safety topics each month.

According to Alberta Transportation, more than half of all fatal collisions involving high speeds occur in rural areas. From 2014 to 2018, close to one in four traffic collisions involved high speeds.

Driving schools around Medicine Hat are doing what they can to educate drivers about speeding.

Mona Delaney, co-owner of Drivers Edge driving school, says even the most experienced drivers should take caution when they are behind the wheel.

“Speed limits are set for a reason,” Delaney says. “When people don’t follow the speed limit and they speed, they make everyone they share the road with make the wrong decisions. That’s when collisions happen.”

Alberta RCMP issued more than 70,000 speeding tickets last year, with more than 5,200 tickets given out last April alone.
