ICE dominate back half of Sunday rematch, knock off Tigers 8-2

Apr 10, 2022 | 7:30 PM

WINNIPEG, MB – A second period comeback attempt by the Tigers was snuffed out by the Winnipeg ICE on Sunday, capping off a winless trip to Manitoba this weekend by Medicine Hat.

Tyler MacKenzie and Noah Danielson tallied goals to help pull Medicine Hat to within a one-goal deficit midway through the second, but Winnipeg was able to open the floodgates from there to capture an 8-2 victory in a rematch of Saturday’s 6-1 win for the ICE.

Winnipeg was led by five-point efforts from Nolan Orzeck and Mikey Milne, while Daniel Hauser stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced to help the ICE clinch first place in the WHL entering playoffs.

ICE defender Benjamin Zloty was able to beat Beckett Langkow 6:15 into Sunday contest to give the home side an early 1-0 lead, before Milne converted a beautiful pass by Owen Boucher five minutes later.

Draft eligible Connor Geekie extended Winnipeg’s lead to 3-0 just under seven minutes into the second, getting just enough of a shot to beat Langkow for his 23rd of the year.

The Tigers got that goal back from a passing play across the blue line from Owen MacNeil and Noah Danielson, which was finished off with a Tyler MacKenzie centring pass that banked off a Winnipeg skater and into the net.

Two minutes after MacKenzie’s tally, Danielson converted on a backhand saucer pass with a one-timer to fool Hauser and get the Tigers back into the game.

Just as Medicine Hat’s momentum began to pick up, Matthew Savoie was able to score on a backdoor tap in at four-on-four to restore the two-goal lead.

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Connor McClennon joined in on the scoring to cap off the second frame with a five-hole shot that slid past Langkow with 3:07 left before the intermission to put the game back into Winnipeg’s grasp.

In the third, the ICE were able to pick up second goals from Savoie, Zloty and McClennon to drive the final nail home in the 8-2 victory.

Langkow stopped 25 of 33 shots against on Sunday, as the Tigers were outscored 20-6 over the course of their Manitoba road trip.

Missing playoffs, the Tigers will return home to Medicine Hat for their final game of the 2021-22 season on Friday night as they host the Edmonton Oil Kings at 7:00 pm.

It will be the final game of Logan Barlage’s and Carter Chorney’s junior careers, while Tigers play by play voice Bob Ridley will make his return to the broadcast booth after missing the previous 67 games of the season due to medical leave.
