Crown attorneys’ group sends list of demand to provincial government

Apr 8, 2022 | 2:12 PM

EDMONTON – The group representing Alberta’s 380 Crown prosecutors says the province’s justice system is in crisis.

The Alberta Crown Attorneys’ Association sent a letter to Premier Jason Kenney, Justice Minister Tyler Shandro and Labour Minister Kaycee Madu last month.

Association president Dallas Sopko says the letter listed demands that included prosecutors being able to collectively bargain with the government.

He says other provinces are compensating their Crown lawyers up to 40 per cent more and Alberta is losing senior prosecutors as a result.

Sopko says there also needs to be a salary grid that puts Alberta on par with Ontario and British Columbia.

He says prosecutors face crushing file loads and lack adequate mental-health supports.

Shandro said in a statement that the association is being invited to a meeting next week to find ways to address its concerns.
