MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service has added another eight body-worn cameras, supplementing the 10 that have been in use since 2018.

The body-worn cameras have generated positive feedback from both officers and the public which is why MHPS thinks it is the right time to expand the technology.

The cameras allow them to accurately record real-time events that are useful in court, for officer-involved complaints and for training purposes.

Each camera costs about $950 as well as $30 a month in data storage fees.

Staff Sgt. Chad Holt, who oversees the body-worn camera program, says MHPS wants to keep expanding it.

“Our end goal would be to hopefully deploy at least 80 per cent of our patrol members would have body-worn cameras, 100 per cent of our traffic members and 100 per cent of our downtown patrol unit,” Holt said. “That’s our goal over the next four years.”

Each camera is issued to a single officer and is not shared like police radios or vehicles.
