Langkow Stops 42

Early lead evaporates for Tigers in home-and-home opener against ‘Canes

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A two-goal lead vanished Friday night for the Medicine Hat Tigers in their final trip to the ENMAX Centre this season.

Taking a 2-0 lead in the opening minute of the second period courtesy of Brayden Boehm, the Tigers gave up five consecutive goals against the Lethbridge Hurricanes en route to a 6-3 loss to kick off their weekend.

Beckett Langkow was peppered with 48 shots against and posted a career-best 42-save performance in the loss, as the Tigers dropped their sixth in a row.

Despite being outshot 23-8 over the opening 20 minutes, it was Medicine Hat taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission with Rhett Parsons wiring a feed from Logan Barlage just under seven minutes into the game past the blocker of Hurricanes netminder Jared Picklyk.

Boehm doubled the Tigers’ lead just 35 seconds out of the intermission by finishing off a give-and-go play from Barlage five-hole off the rush to keep momentum firmly in Medicine Hat’s grasp.

It took the Hurricanes just a minute later to tally their first of the night however, as Tyson Laventure hopped on a rebound to break the brick wall that had been Langkow to that point.

Laventure’s marker was followed up by an Alex Thacker tipped point shot from Chase Pauls to knot up the score at 2-2 before the midway point of the second.

Lethbridge added to their goal totals with a Brayden Edwards rebound tally before Thacker’s second on the power play to break the Tigers’ streak of 21 successful kills to go ahead 4-2.

Hayden Smith made it a 5-2 game just over five minutes into the third by finishing off a passing play from Laventure and Briley Wood to make it five consecutive goals for the ‘Canes.

Just as Medicine Hat appeared to be mounting a late comeback charge with a Josh Van Mulligen snipe for his second career WHL goal, Lethbridge capped off the win with a late tally from defender Kade Nolan.

Aside from Langkow’s career-best performance, Boehm recorded a goal and two-assists for the first three-point night of his career in the loss.

Falling to 0-7 this season against Lethbridge, the Tigers and Hurricanes will wind up their season series on Saturday night at Co-Op Place for ‘Bob Ridley Tribute Night’ which will include a banner unveiling with a special pre-game ceremony.

Doors will open at 6:00 pm with a limited number of commemorative cards for those first into the building, before the puck drops at 7:00 pm.
