Vigil to be held for National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women

Dec 6, 2021 | 4:33 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB– Today marks 32 years since the L’Ecole Polytechnique Massacre in Montreal. Fourteen women were killed and 14 others were injured after being shot by an anti-feminist gunman on this day in 1989.

Today is now known as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. Vigils are being held across the country, including here in Medicine Hat. The event is being put on by the college and Medicine Hat Women’s shelter society.

Executive director of the Student’s Association of Medicine Hat College Rebeca Rothfus says it is important that students understand the impact of the tragedy.

“I think it is important that we don’t forget about that travesty and raise awareness, and try to put an end to gender-based violence.”

Natasha Caravallo of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society says it is unfortunate that a vigil has to be held every year but it is necessary.

” I worry that this was a misogynistic attack 32 years ago and we still see misogyny in our society today and I worry about that. I worry about the fact we expanded our shelter capacity of 30 beds in a community this size because there continues to be violence against women,” Caravello said.

A live stream of the event will occur on the event’s Facebook page. Those wishing to attend in person are asked to show ID and proof of vaccination. Attendees may also submit a negative rapid test or medical exemption. Masks are required under the college’s policy.
