Eight straight losses for struggling Tigers falling in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was another night and another loss for the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday, seeing their losing skid run to eight games in their first meeting with their biggest rival.

Reigniting the Highway 3 rivalry with the Lethbridge Hurricanes six weeks into the WHL season, the Tigers allowed four goals in the third period en route to a 7-3 loss.

Hurricanes veteran Justin Hall had a night to remember recording his first career hat-trick while adding two assists to add to the Tigers’ nightmare November.

Hall kicked off the night with a highlight-reel goal, going between the legs to beat Beckett Langkow on the first shot of the game 1:19 in.

Lethbridge’s lead was doubled to 2-0 later in the period with defender Nolan Bentham gloving down a puck at centre ice and letting a wrist shot go for his first as a member of the Hurricanes.

Before the period was out however, the Tigers cut into that ‘Canes lead courtesy of Gleb Ivanov’s first career WHL goal off a sweet cross-ice feed by Oasiz Wiesblatt to make it a 2-1 game.

Corson Hopwo tied up the score at 2-2 less than three minutes into the second frame, potting his seventh of the season to draw thing back to even for the black and orange.

That would be as close as Medicine Hat would get to the lead on Friday though, as Hall netted his second of the night with 4:46 left before the second intermission to restore Lethbridge’s one-goal lead.

Lethbridge rookie Logan Wormald doubled that lead to 4-2 around seven minutes into the third, but the Tigers countered back with a rebound marker from Teague Patton to cut the deficit to one with 9:35 left.

The wheels fell off on the Tabbies from there though, as a point-blank chance for Hopwo in tight was stopped by Jared Picklyk and Hall turned down the ice to get his third of the game unassisted.

Late period goals by Wormald and Logan Barlage sealed the win for the Hurricanes, who took the first of eight games between the southern Alberta rivals.

Langkow allowed six goals on 26 shots against, while Picklyk registered his second win of the season with 25 stops.

It’s back to the drawing board for the Tigers on Saturday night against the Canadian Hockey League’s top-ranked club, looking to bounce back against the powerhouse Winnipeg ICE on home ice at 7:00 pm.
