Accused in mall stabbing found not criminally responsible

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A man who stabbed his father in the neck at the Medicine Hat Mall in January 2020 has been found not criminally responsible on the most serious charge he faced.

Paul Fabreau, 42, was found not criminally responsible on count 1, aggravated assault, and count 3, failure to comply with release order. Count 2, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, was dismissed.

Fabreau has been sent back to the Calgary Forensic Centre and will appear before the psychiatric board of Alberta in the next 90 days for them to determine the next steps for Fabreau.

Fabreau testified on Monday that on the day of the stabbing he was going through a spiritual attack, which he described as energy pulses that signal to Fabreau that he is being manipulated.

At a phone kiosk in the mall, Fabreau said he began to sweat and he heard there were dozens of people ready to hurt him and his father. That’s when Fabreau said he took out his knife as a way of protection.

The trial was heard by judge alone in Court of Queen’s Bench.
