Airport upgrades coming to Medicine Hat Regional Airport

May 18, 2021 | 8:45 AM

MEDICINE HAT,AB- Lighting at the Medicine Hat Regional Airport will be receiving face lift, thanks in large part to some federal money.

The airport applied for the Airport Capital Assistance Program and Transport Canada has agreed to fund 95 per cent of the project at $957, 241.

The remaining $50,381 will be funded by the city through an internal loan.

The money will be used to replace airport lighting systems and directional signage.

At Monday’s council meeting, Mayor Ted Clugston said he sees great things in the future for the airport.

“Air travel is only expected to increase, and to give people options outside the city of Medicine Hat, if they can fly out of here and connect in Calgary, it is far, far better for our residents and for our economy then to have to drive to Calgary,” Mayor Clugston said, adding he is confident Air Canada and WestJet will make a return to the city.

The approval of the lighting upgrades will mean all critical infrastructure will be up to date. Since 2012, the city began to upgrade its airport infrastructure. Some of the upgrades over the years include the expansion of the passenger terminal, improving airport parking areas, and the replacement of lighting and drainage on the main runway.

“We were ready for wonderful things until the pandemic. This little break has given us the opportunity through the increased funding from the federal government to take care of that last critical piece of infrastructure to keep us safe. We were never unsafe, but after 21 years of operation these things they start to get expensive to operate and expensive to maintain,” said airport manager Jeff Huntus.
