Call for resignation evidence of old party wounds

MHC political scientist says Kenney at a cross roads

MEDICINE HAT — A Medicine Hat College political science instructor, sees today’s calls for the resignation of Jason Kenney as leader of the United Conservative party, as a continuation of internal struggles between former Wildrose members and Progressive Conservatives.

Jim Groom says former Wildrose leader Brian Jean has been asking pointed questions on social media, and today’s call from UCP chair Todd Loewen for Kenney’s resignation, just brings the internal divisions back into the open.

“It’s getting kind of ugly in a way, and very personal” says Groom.

Groom says ” it’s Jason Kenney and his supporters versus the oppositon to his position and it’s pretty clear people have drawn lines in the sand as to which position they’re going to take.”

Groom says Loewen held a high position within the UCP as caucus chair, and was a trusted ally, so it will be interesting to see what move Kenney makes next.

” I can’t see how he can continue to see his empire crumpling underneath him without making a stand and saying you’re either with me or against me, now make up your minds” says Groom.

Groom says Kenney has tried a moderate approach for the last two years and it’s obviously come back to haunt him here.

Loewen called on Kenney to resign in an open letter on his Facebook page, saying unity within the party is falling apart and Kenney needs to step down in order to repair the break and allow the province to move forward.

Lowen has stepped down from his position as chair of the UCP caucus in order to freely speak his mind.
