Thanking the frontlines, National Nurses Week underway

May 12, 2021 | 4:12 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – This is National Nurses Week. It’s a week dedicated to sharing gratitude and appreciation for nurses working on the frontlines.

Linda Tessmann-Potvin is a registered nurse with over 35 years of nursing experience.

She says it has been a challenging year in health care.

“We’ve had H1N1, but COVID is different, right, and this has been a long time.”

Tessmann-Potvin is the South Zone Senior Operating Officer and Medicine Hat lead.

This year’s AHS nursing week theme is supporting each other.

She says right now, there are a lot of challenges around COVID, including new protocols and practices.

Their nurses work across a variety of areas which include acute care, continuing care, and public health.

Along with providing medical care, she says nursing is a compassionate job.

Their teams work with individuals that are having significant life events.

“Certainly what we find is our nurses are supporting patient’s families, they’re supporting their colleagues and they’re also supporting their families. And in the face of all the challenges, they come to work every day to really meet the needs of the healthcare of Albertans,” Tessmann-Potvin added.
