May 7, 2021 | 11:15 AM

A daytime shelter in Medicine Hat that was established as an emergency response to COVID-19 officially opens today (Fri. May 7).

Last month, the location at 435 North Railway Street was given the official go-ahead.

The former Mustard Seed location is open to those experiencing homelessness.

McMan Youth, Family, and Community Services Association will operate the daytime shelter from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM daily.

“We are committed to being a good neighbour,” says McMan executive director Tracie Mutschler. “Our staff are highly trained to work with vulnerable populations and we have put in place systems to ensure if any issues do arise, they are resolved quickly to the benefit of all involved including nearby businesses and residences.”

According to a release from Medicine Hat Community Housing Society, only individuals who have used shelter the previous night or those who are known to be sleeping rough will be able to access the daytime shelter.

The society adds since the start of 2021, an average of nine individuals access the Salvation Army Medicine Hat Centre of Hope Shelter nightly.

The daytime shelter will provide a range of supports. Focusing on housing and recovery-based services and programming.

“This move to opening the Daytime Shelter at the North Railway location is a positive step forward to ensuring the safety and well-being of our homeless population,” says Jaime Rogers, manager of Homeless & Housing Department at the MH Community Housing Society. “This is a short-term location in response to the pandemic, however, we are looking forward to developing a long-term solution.”

Funding to operate the shelter will end September 30.
