Schools going online, patios and personal services shut by new public health measures
Most of Alberta’s Kindergarten to Grade 12 students will move to at-home learning starting this Friday and there are new limits on retail, restaurants and personal services as the province tries to stop soaring daily COVID-19 case counts and rising hospitalizations and ICU admissions that threaten to overwhelm Alberta’s health system.
“We will not permit our health-care system to be overwhelmed. We must not and we will not force our doctors and nurses to decide who gets care and who doesn’t,” said Premier Jason Kenney in an address to the province.
The new restrictions announced by Premier Jason Kenney this evening are in effect for all communities with more than 50 cases per 100,000 people and with 30 or more active cases. Medicine Hat has 345 active cases per 100,000 people and 235 active cases.
Elementary, junior high and senior high students will start online learning May 7 and remain there until May 25.
