MEDICINE HAT, AB – The community now has easier access to a large swath of Medicine Hat history compiled by a former museum curator.

Last year, the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre was able to catalogue, digitize and make accessible the fonds of Jack Barrie. Fonds are the entire collection of the records originating from the same creator.

“Jack Barrie was a very active artist and historian in our community, and we are very pleased to have and be able to share the results of much of his creation and collecting here at the Esplanade,” says Philip Pype, Esplanade archivist in a release.

The Esplanade was able to undertake the work thanks to a grant from the Archives Society of Alberta, with funding provided by the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation.

The city says these records include about 600 photographs and several folders of papers collected and created by Barrie. Among them is a First World War photo album assembled by Medicine Hat soldier Charles Anderson Krauss.

Detailed descriptions of these materials and digitized photographs can be accessed through the Esplanade website.

Archival reference services are available by phone at 403-502-8582 and via email.
