MEDICINE HAT, AB – CAPE School was a mosaic of diversity on Friday with students and staff celebrating Culture Day.

Students presented to their classes through traditional cultural clothing, food, art and more.

Countries represented during the day included Brazil, South Korea, Australia and India, which was highlighted by Angelina Poddar and Jeeya Gupta.

“We did a lot of the food, the religions, culture, language, the clothing as I explained. People, famous people,” said the pair.”Contributions India has made to the world, they gave to others. Some of them are like diamonds. Buttons were invented in India, shampoo was invented in India, things like that.”

They were both dressed in traditional clothing from the country.

Jeeya, a Grade 7 student, wore a variation of a lehenga. Grade 6 student Poddar was in something she said is similar to a salwar kameez.

They were both beautifully embroidered with gold, a popular look in India.

Jeeya and Poddar hope their presentation sparks an interest in other students to travel to the country and experience it first-hand.

Teacher Taylor Wood says that hopefully by exposing students to the difference between cultures they’ll also realize there are a lot of similarities.
