Variety of jobs available in the region says Employment Hub

MEDICINE HAT, AB – If you have been out of work and are looking for a job in the city or region, there are options out there, everything from entry-level jobs to higher-paying professions.

That’s according to career and employment consultants with Medicine Hat Employment Hub.

They say jobs have held steady in our labour market, last week there were 375 jobs posted on Indeed.

Beverly Gauthier says with restaurants opening up, they’re starting to recruit and advertise.

There’s a need for in-house positions with food services and retail jobs.

“Even in health care, personal care, child & youth care, education positions – more are popping up that are entry-level that say they’re willing to train and willing to provide on the job experience for people to get into those fields because they’re seeing a need,” Gauthier said.

Greenhouse work, seasonal construction, and landscaping positions are going to start ramping up as well.

Many greenhouses have started hiring, which is an annual trend the Employment Hub sees every year.

They are also seeing more people use these positions as a survival job to help pay the bills while they look for something more suited to their career.

Meantime, higher-paying jobs are still in existence with positions in social services and health care.

Employment consultant Mindy Lewis says those are prevalent industries even if you’re looking at going back for training.

She says lots of remote work has also come out of 2020 and front line jobs in the pandemic have been popular.

“Emerging occupations that we’ve seen come up do to the pandemic, so COVID testers and tracers, those are always in high demand. As well as new occupations like going into seniors homes and keeping seniors company and making sure that they can use technology to reach out to their friends and family at this time,” Lewis said.

The Employment Hub says there’s also optimism for the construction sector with higher-paying jobs expected in the next month or so with capital spending projects planned.

A drive-thru job fair is planned for Wednesday, March 10. More information can be found by visiting this link.
