Canadian cricketer Nitish Kumar turns heads with a century in the Caribbean

OSBOURN, Antigua And Barbuda — Canadian cricketer Nitish Kumar turned heads in the opening match of the Caribbean Regional Super50 Tournament.

Kumar hit a century for the Leeward Islands Hurricanes on Sunday in a losing cause against the the Windward Islands Volcanoes. Kumar finished with 112 runs off 106 balls with nine fours and two sixes at Antigua and Barbuda’s Coolidge Cricket Center.

The Hurricanes were dismissed for 253 off 47.2 overs, 31 runs short of the required victory target.

Kumar is the only non-West Indian player in the six-team competition, which runs through Feb. 27.

The 26-year-old from Toronto made his one-day International debut in 2011, becoming the second-youngest-ever ODI player. A right-handed batsman and right-arm off-spinner, he most recently represented Canada at the 2019-20 Caribbean Regional Super50 Tournament, where he was the team’s leading run-scorer with 265 runs in eight matches.
