Hockey Alberta cancels rest of 2020-21 minor hockey season

RED DEER, AB – Minor hockey will not be returning for league games this winter, as Hockey Alberta has made the call to cancel the remainder of the season.

The organization confirmed the decision on Tuesday afternoon, concluding league play for all tiered, AAA and AA minor hockey province-wide due to the pandemic.

Hockey Alberta had been meeting with the province and set Monday as a deadline for a decision on league play, concluding that there is not enough runway for a standard return to the ice.

On Friday, the province unveiled its approach for tackling Alberta’s re-opening with at least three weeks needed between Stage 1 and Stage 2, which would be the earliest possible date for the return of the minor hockey on March 1.

“Hockey Alberta is disappointed by the Government’s announcement,” said Hockey Alberta in a statement. “Our senior leadership team has been involved in ongoing discussions on what a safe and inclusive relaunch plan could look like for our sport.”

Locally, this means the cancellation of all games for Medicine Hat Minor Hockey, the SEAC Tigers programs and more.

However, the South Alberta Hockey Academy is still able to operate as school based programs are not part of Hockey Alberta’s cancellation on Tuesday.

Hockey Alberta is still optimistic that a spring development season could still be possible for players and teams interested in the coming months.

As for Junior B, C, and female and senior leagues, Hockey Alberta has set a target of February 8 to make a decision on the viability of their seasons.
