“We must remain vigilant” if we want to begin easing public health restrictions next week

Medicine Hat, AB–The province has confirmed 355 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours. There are 7,387 active cases across Alberta.

10 deaths were reported.

7,300 tests were completed over the last 24 hours and the provincial positivity rate sits at 4.9 percent.

51 cases of the variants found in the United Kingdom and South Africa have been identified in Alberta. The province continues to investigate one case of the variant that was not linked to travel. At this point, the source of that case has not been found but the variant has not spread outside household transmission.

Hospitalizations are continuing to decline. Currently there are 556 people in hospital, 102 of those are in the ICU.

Chief Medical Health Officer Doctor Deena Hinshaw says “the steady decline we are seeing is encouraging and a testament to the hard work of so many”. She added “we have reached a place where we should be able to further ease measures on February 8th but we have seen cases fall and rise before. We all must remain vigilant and be extra careful to help keep schools, continuing care facilities and all other settings safe and to keep hospitalizations trending downwards”.

In Medicine Hat, there are 16 active cases, 498 recoveries, and 13 recorded deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Cypress County currently has 2 active cases and 143 recoveries.

In Newell County, there are five active cases, 150 recoveries and two deaths.

The city of Brooks has two active cases, 1,345 recoveries, and 14 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Lethbridge County has 26 active cases, 481 recoveries, and seven deaths.

The city of Lethbridge has 144 active cases, 1577 recoveries, and 12 deaths.

106, 000 doses of the vaccine have been administered in Alberta. As of Monday, 16, 200 Albertans have been full vaccinated meaning they have received 2 doses of the vaccine.

In schools, Hinshaw says there is encouraging news as average daily case numbers in school age children continues to fall week over week. Last week, 71 new cases were identified each day compared to 131 daily cases the week before school returned to in person learning.
