COVID-19 update: Provincial positivity rate continues to decline

MEDICINE HAT, AB- As the province looks towards loosening some additional restrictions come Feb. 8, the number of new cases and positivity rate continues to drop.

On Saturday, Jan. 30, the province confirmed 383 new cases. A total of 10,377 tests were completed over a 24 hour period. The provincial positivity rate now stands at 3.8 per cent. That number is down from Friday’s recorded positivity rate of 4.5 per cent.

Hospitalizations stand at 538 province-wide, with 103 in ICU.

The province also recorded 11 new deaths.

There are 7,530 active cases province-wide, 327 cases are in the South Zone.

Medicine Hat has 20 active cases of the virus. 494 people have recovered, and the city has seen 13 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

In Cypress County, there are two active cases and 143 recoveries.

Newell County has six active cases and 149 recoveries. The county has two recorded deaths attributed to COVID-19.

The City of Brooks has three active cases, 1344 recoveries, and 14 recorded deaths.

The Municipal District of Taber has four active cases, 318 recoveries, and six recorded deaths.

Lethbridge County has 30 active cases, 476 recoveries, and seven recorded deaths.

The City of Lethbridge has 143 active cases, 1,568 recoveries, and 12 recorded deaths.

Taking to Twitter Saturday afternoon, the province’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw noted that while case numbers continue to decrease, vigilance and safe choices are still key factors in the fight against the virus. She said choices made by Albertans this weekend, will impact hospitalizations and ICU rates in the weeks to come.

On Friday, Premier Jason Kenney noted hospitalizations will be the key metric that guides how and when public health measures are eased.
