Sanatec can’t let it go, makes frozen kitten a part of the team

MEDICINE HAT, AB – When workers from Sanatec Environmental found a kitten at the lift station in Burdett on the weekend they decided not to let it go and instead made her part of the team.

Sanatec owner Chris Laing says shortly after pulling up to a job just outside the town they spotted a kitten running up the tire tracks they’d left.

“We scrambled to pick her up and we saw that her one eye, her right eye was nearly frozen shut, about half shut, she couldn’t open or close it anymore,” Laing said.

They put her in the truck to warm her up and posted a photo to Facebook hoping to find the owner. While waiting, one of the guys began knocking on doors.

“A lady out there informed us that one of her previous neighbours had brought in a cat that had a litter and abandoned that cat and she was having an issue with stray cats,” Laing said. “She had been feeding it and was very excited at the idea that we take it away.”

After briefly considering taking her to APARC, managers held a meeting – “about 30 seconds,” says Laing – decided to hire her on as Santatec’s new Assistant Rodent Control Officer.

“We already do have an office cat for rodent control but he’s getting to be over 15 years old now so he can apprentice the new one,” Laing said.

Sanatec staff have named her “Elsa” for the heroine in Disney’s Frozen, a playful nod to the condition she was found, and is fitting in well.

Laing says it’s hard for some people to get work done the past few days with Elsa demanding a lot of everybody’s attention.

Elsa went for a checkup Tuesday at Animal Medical Centre South in Dunmore, where staff determined she is about five to six weeks old. She is being treated for worms and is getting eye drops for conjunctivitis.

Sanatec has received lots of great feedback about how they’ve stepped up and lots of offers of food, supplies and toys.

“We’re good but if you have that stuff to donate please donate it to one of the charities that really need it,” Laing said.
