Bars & pubs pivot hours to adhere to COVID-19 health measures

Nov 16, 2020 | 4:22 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – With Medicine Hat now listed under the COVID-19 enhanced status, bars and pubs had to pivot their hours going into the weekend.

Those establishments must stop liquor sales by 10 pm and close by 11 pm.

Owner of Lizard’s Pub Richard Barlow says it’s too early to say what liquor sales will look like after the first weekend with the new measures.

And it’s something their customers will have to get used to for the two weeks they are in effect.

Barlow says after being an owner for 25 years, you learn how to adapt, “We weren’t too sure, because at first we weren’t on that list Medicine Hat and then all of a sudden we were on that list the next day so you adjust, you have to.”

Owner of The Lucky Goat Peter Wigle says the new restrictions were a surprise for them and their customers were surprised as well about the quick changes.

“Our business thrives from 9 pm- 10 pm until 1 am and 2 am in the morning on Fridays and Saturdays. People usually go out a little later. So it’s going to have a definite impact on all the pubs in Medicine Hat. But I think people will either change their habits and go out a little earlier or just stay home,” Wigle said.

He says Saturday was a quiet night, and he expects the next couple of weeks to be slower as well.

This public health restriction will remain in place until November 27.

Owner of Dee-Jay’s Pub Dee Schall says this restriction won’t affect them too much because they already close at 10 pm.

They bought the pub during COVID and decided to close at 10 pm.

Schall hopes everyone can do their part to reduce the spread, “Let’s just all get along, for our jobs, do our parts, then we can get through this together and really have a good time and everyone can get to a semi-normal life again.”

Schall adds their clients have all been good about making sure they following the guidelines.
