Caring Coats aims to provide a warm coat to those in need

MEDICINE HAT, AB- It’s a campaign aimed at ensuring the city’s vulnerable have a warm winter coat to get them through the winter, and this year the Salvation Army and The Post Thrift Store are hoping to reach more people in need once again.

“ Caring Coats helps anyone that needs help. Anyone that needs a coat we are there to help them,” said Pastor Lorenda Dale.

Last year, The Salvation Army distributed approximately 200 jackets to people in the community, and this year, they have already handed out warm coats to people in need, many of whom are out in the elements regularly.

“It impacts them very much. People don’t always have the money to purchase a nice winter coat. Winter coats are expensive and people sometimes don’t always have the money, and sometimes when we think Caring Coats or we think bringing coats in for people we think it is just for the homeless but it is for the vulnerable here in Medicine Hat that have housing but don’t always have a lot of money left over. We see them every day in our lines here when we serve out hot meals,” Dale said.

Coats for all ages are accepted but Dale said the Salvation army typically sees a greater need for men’s coats every year.

Jackets can be dropped off all winter at the Salvation Army Community Resource Centre downtown, or The Post Thrift Store.

The Salvation Army is also seeking donations for warm winter essentials like gloves, scarves, and toques.
