A lot of snow, but not a record

MEDICINE HAT, AB – An Environment Canada meteorologist says the snowfall in Medicine Hat on Sunday didn’t reach record status but did come close.

“The record one-day snowfalls are typically in the 30s (centimetres) I think it (the record) is around 35 for Medicine Hat,” says Edmonton-based Dan Kulak.

Environment Canada’s weather summary of the storm says 31 cm of snow fell on The Gas City. To the west, Lethbridge received 24 cm.

A record was set in Kindersley, Sask., which got 35.8 cm of snow.

Record or not, Kulak says this amount of snow shows the value of having a 72-hour preparedness kit and watching the weather forecast.

The current forecast shows a “bit of a warm up and then a bit more snow and then a bit of a warmup toward the latter part of the week,” Kulak says.

Neither of those warmups will do much to get rid of the snow, he adds.

“I think there’s enough snow out there that it’s going to stick around for a while. I wouldn’t count on the melt until spring. Or a good chinook.”
