Travel advisory issued as winter storm hits Medicine Hat

Update: (10 a.m.). The MHPS is continuing to stress the importance of avoiding non-essential travel at this time and are advising drivers to be prepared if they do need to hit the road.

Certain roads are experiencing traffic congestion, according to the MHPS, due to motorists, such as semi-trucks having difficulty driving uphill.

MEDICINE HAT, AB- Motorists are being advised to stay off the roads and avoid any non-essential travel as an intense winter storm pummels through Medicine Hat.

In a Facebook post, the Medicine Hat Police Service said officers are reporting icy conditions and poor visibility.

The AMA road report also describes icy conditions stretching from Hwy 1 in Redcliff to the Saskatchewan border.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the following regions:

-City of Medicine Hat

  • Co. of Forty Mile near Bow Island and Whitla
  • Co. of Newell near Patricia
  • Co. of Newell near Tilley and Rolling Hills
  • Cypress Co. near Bowell and Redcliff
  • Cypress Co. near Bowmanton Schuler and Hilda
  • Cypress Co. near CFB Suffield
  • Cypress Co. near Dunmore and Woolchester
  • Cypress Co. near Irvine and Walsh
  • Cypress Co. near McNeill and Sandy Point District Park
  • Cypress Co. near Seven Persons
  • Cypress Co. near Suffield and Hwy 879
  • Cypress Co. near Tide Lake
  • S.A. 2 near Bindloss Empress and Social Plains
  • S.A. 2 near Buffalo and Cavendish
  • S.A. 2 near Iddesleigh and Dinosaur Prov. Park

It notes hazardous conditions are expected as snow continues today in Southern Alberta.

About 20 to 40 cm of snow is expected with higher amounts in the Crowsnest Pass region and Cypress Hills.

In Medicine hat, 10 to 20 cm of snow is expected with winds gusting north 40 km to 70 km an hour.

Temperatures are expected to fall to a low of minus eight this afternoon with the wind chill near minus 18.

Later tonight, the blowing snow is set to continue before ending in the morning. Clouds are expected with five to 10 cm of snow and a low of minus 10. Windchill near minus 18.
