Trent Roset says returned guitars will make Mahoney sound like Mahoney again

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat band Mahoney can make beautiful music once again.

About five weeks ago Mahoney’s Trent Roset and Ryan Massini realized much of their equipment had been stolen from their van.

At the time, they said it was adding insult to injury, just one more financial blow after they were already struggling due to COVID-19 restrictions.

When he learned this week that most of the equipment had been recovered and a charge laid, Roset said he was on cloud nine for the rest of the day.

Everything from instruments to pedals to mics and cords were stolen. But it was the guitars that meant most to Roset and Massini.

“The two guitars that Ryan and I have been using we purchased back about five or six years ago for our big Esplanade release. And so that was a relief And those are guitars that, they just sound unique compared to anything else I’ve ever played,” Roset said. “Getting our guitars back is … I don’t even know how we were going to replace them. It’s going to make Mahoney sound like Mahoney again.

Unique guitar pedals the duo had originally searched for for years were also recovered. The pair are still assessing the condition of the recovered items.

When Hatters learned of the theft the music community and the community at large quickly came to Mahoney’s aid.

People had their eyes open for the stolen items in stores and online, often messaging Roset or Massini to ask if something belonged to them.

A gofundme page was also established so the guys could replace the stolen items and people quickly offered musical instruments and equipment in the meantime.

“They supported us so much and so well and we want to put together something that shows we’re so grateful and so thankful,” Roset said. “They did support us financially so we’re going to use some of those (donated) funds and make sure that we can give back to the community and have some fun with those dollars.”

He said they want to give back to the community and put together something “pretty awesome.”

Mahoney will play at Ralph’s on Friday night.
