Residents maintaining physical distancing but warm weather a concern

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The weather is sunny and temperatures are in the double digits for the first time since October, drawing many home-bound Hatters out of their houses and into the community. But city police and bylaw officers will be out to ensure individuals maintain physical distancing.

Insp. Brent Secondiak says there have been few warnings given to Hatters to maintain physical distancing and he is hoping that trend continues but admits the warm weather is a concern.

“Our role, of course, is to enforce the chief medical officer of health’s orders and thus far, I have to say, the community in Medicine Hat has been outstanding,” said Secondiak.

Those orders are that people must stay at least two metres away from others, with the exception of those who live in the same household.

Those who don’t could face a $1,000 fine for the first offence, which will increase if there are subsequent incidents.

The city’s trails and parks are still open and accessible – with the exception of playgrounds – said Secondiak, but police have concerns about what the warm weather will bring aside from pleasant temperatures.

“Our biggest concern is that people aren’t congregating and having parties or different households coming together to have different events,” he said.

Two public areas Secondiak says are of concern are Police Point Park and picnic areas along the river, adding that as long as people maintain physical distancing, there shouldn’t be an issue.

City officials closed all outdoor playground and workout equipment along with the skatepark on April 10 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
