MH Transit adding COVID-19 safety measures

Apr 17, 2020 | 12:37 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – New safety measures are coming to Medicine Hat Transit to help keep passengers and drivers safe and slow the spread of COVID-19.

Beginning on April 20, capacity limits on buses will be in place and passengers who rely on driver assistance will be required to wear a non-medical mask or other face covering.

Gordon Dykstra, Superintendent of Transit Operations, said the limits will be seven or eight people on mid-size buses and 11 or 12 on the larger ones. Different seating configurations on buses allow for the extra person on some.

“We are working to keep our drivers healthy while also ensuring our riders are comfortable and safe while getting to where they need to go,” said Dykstra. “We will do our best to respond in those instances where some passengers may not be permitted to board due to restricted capacity.”

“These additional measures will help reduce the risk of virus transmission while keeping transit operating at its current levels,” Dykstra added.

Residents are urged to only use Medicine Hat Transit for “essential travel only, which includes getting groceries, attending medical appointments or going to and from work.”
