Local shuttle service continues with reduced trips during pandemic

MEDICINE HAT, AB – We know travel plans have been heavily impacted due to COVID-19 cancellations, whether it’s domestic or international.

Here in Medicine Hat, the Prairie Sprinter shuttle service to Calgary and back has also been seeing fewer riders.

Prairie Sprinter Co-Owner Isabel Hansen says they are operating one van daily instead of two and also making one trip per day to Calgary.

She says the number of passengers is not enough to support both vans right now.

And there’s been many trip cancellations from riders.

There have even been cancellations for their wedding charters until large groups can gather again.

Hansen says international college students are using their service to the airport so they can get back home.

With some changes, she says the shuttle is still here to take people to their destination and appointments.

“We’re not accepting any international or domestic flights at the airport any longer due to the government guidelines of self-isolating. And we’re trying to practice distancing in the van as well so you know, we’re not filling our vans which isn’t a problem right now anyways.”

Prairie Sprinter is keeping sanitizer and wipes in their vans and cleaning between drop-offs.

And they’re making sure riders are feeling well before they travel.

“We’re screening on the phone as well when people are riding or asking them not to travel if they feel at all not well. My partner who is doing the driving right now he double screens when he’s picking people up he questions them as well that they haven’t been out of the country and that they’re feeling okay.”

Hansen adds with COVID-19 precautions, they currently have 3-4 passengers per day.
