EDMONTON – There are 31 new cases of COVID-19 in Alberta including one in a seniors’ home while there was a walkout of a “small number” of nurses who were not provided with adequate protection.

Marcia Johnson, Edmonton Zone officer of health, provided Saturday’s update outlining the situation in the province right now but stopped short of identifying the affected seniors’ home.

“We will not be telling you which seniors home at this time,” said Johnson, adding she is “optimistic” the situation can be controlled.

In the South Zone, there is a total of six cases – two in Medicine Hat, one in the M.D. of Taber and three in Lethbridge. Five of those cases involve individuals between 25 and 44 years old. The remaining case involves a teen.

Out of the 31 new cases, 16 are believed to be community transmitted with a total of 11 people hospitalized, six of which are in the intensive care unit.

There are now 226 cases in the province.
