WALSH, AB — A young woman from Cypress County is taking on a unique project to help support HALO Air Rescue.

Alyssa Zieffle, 15, who lives near Walsh, is currently raising a Heifer calf for sale, with the goal of donating the proceeds generated from the sale to HALO.

For Zieffle, helping HALO is a personal cause for her.

“My dad is a volunteer firefighter, and has used HALO multiple times, and we just have to all pitch in to keep HALO up in the sky and available for all of our use,” she said.

The calf was donated by Hargrave Ranching, and is named Sugar.

“I’ve always just loved something with more colour, and unique marks,” she said. “They really give them character. With her markings, they just kind of reminded me of a halo.”

Zieffle is responsible for raising her and taming her before the spring, where the calf will be going to Spring Creek Colony for artificial insemination.

“It’s an every day thing,” she said. “They have to get used to people being around, and noises, and getting used to people being handled more than a regular cow.”

After nearly two months of work, Zieffle says Sugar is getting better every day.

“When she came here, she was not too fond of people, but with me being out there every day, she’s calmed down a ton,” she said. “I’ve been working with her every day, and it should be another month before she’s calmed down lots that more people can come around her and see her.”

After calving season, Sugar will be sold in the fall at auction.

Zieffle says she’s excited to help out the community.

“HALO means quite a bit to us,” she said. “I’ve known quite a few people who have gone up in HALO, so it does mean a lot to me.”
