Medicine Hat College, University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College plan additional collaboration

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Three post-secondary institutions in southern Alberta are officially partnering to help enhance post-secondary education in southern Alberta.

Medicine Hat College, along with Lethbridge College and the University of Lethbridge, both recently agreed to eight principles to help guide future joint initiatives between the three institutions. The principles consider the needs of the students, the region, industry needs, the Indigenous community, and goals set by the provincial government, according to a news release.

Medicine Hat College president Kevin Shufflebotham says the partnership was formalized a month ago between the three institutions.

“What this partnership signifies is that together, we’re stronger, than acting as individuals,” he said.

Shufflebotham says the three institutions have goals to increase collaboration, improve student access and improve the quality of education.

He adds it will also lead to more resource sharing at the three schools.

“One, for example, is around legal advice,” he said. “So, if one institution goes out for legal advice, could we share the legal advice across the 3 institutions? Another one that really excites me is around student access. So when students move between Lethbridge College, University of Lethbridge and Medicine Hat College, what does that look like, and how can we make that easier for students?”

The full eight principles are listed below.

  • To create an ecosystem of post-secondary learning that supports Government of Alberta goals while operating as independent institutions
  • To increase participation and retention in post-secondary education through domestic and international recruitment strategies and student support services
  • To ensure success for learners through a seamless pathway between certificate, diploma and bachelor programs, as well as opportunities to progress to graduate studies
  • To enable access to work integrated learning opportunities across southern Alberta
  • To support regional economic development by aligning programming with the needs of industry
  • To support the health and vibrancy of our rural communities by working together to enhance access and develop programming relevant to the rural economy
  • To further develop partnerships with Indigenous communities that support regional reconciliation and Indigenous learner success
  • To find operational collaborative opportunities, spanning the full mandates of our institutions, to support our sustainability and protect jobs in the post-secondary sector
