City hosting consultations on seniors’ services

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat has started consultation about the future of seniors’ services.

Two public consultations will be held in December. The first will take place at the Veiner Centre on December 12 from 3-5 p.m. The second consultation takes place at the Medicine Hat Public Library from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The process will help “improve the selection and quality of programming being offered and determine if an alternative governance and operating model is better positioned to deliver services,” a release from the city states.

Earlier this year, the city began examining the current funding and operation model of seniors’ services. Currently, the city operates the Veiner and Strathcona Centres, which provide programs and services for seniors, at an annual cost of $1.42 million.

“Our goal throughout this process is to be able to shape our service offering to serve more seniors within our community,” said Aaron Nelson, Manager of Community Connections and Support, in a statement. “In order to do that, we need to sit down with the community to better understand what the needs are.”

Those who cannot attend either of the consultation sessions can also share their thoughts online at www.medicinehat.ca/ShapeYourCity.

Staff will evaluate the feedback received, and are expected to bring a recommendation to council in the spring.
