Catholic board of education’s nutrition program back up and running

Medicine Hat, AB – For the first two months of school, the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education’s nutrition program was put on hold while questions remained about the provincial budget.

After months of wondering, the program is back and running with the $166,000 in funding they needed.

The program, which was launched last year, serves approximately 500 kids in the district at four different schools.

It provides free lunch at St.Franics Xavier, St. Michael’s, and St. Louis, and breakfast at Mother Teresa.

St.Franics Xavier principal and the program coordinator, Nick Gale, says that he couldn’t be happier to see the program back up.

“I think it’s a really good opportunity for us to provide some nutritious food to our kids. It’s a good opportunity to do some education with them as well. I think something like food security isn’t always something we think about and associate with all of our students, but it is something that is an important thing for all of our kids,” he said. “And I think this program gives us a chance to let us give food to every single student regardless of background every single day.”

Gale says that he is hopeful the program will be able to continue for years to come.
