REDCLIFF, AB — Redcliff RCMP have officially released the name of the man charged in a hit and run collision last week which caused severe injuries to a cyclist.

Daniel Leger, 34, of Medicine Hat, has been charged with one count of failure to stop after an accident which resulted in bodily harm.

According to a news release from the RCMP, if convicted, the punishment includes a maximum fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment up to 14 years, or both.

A search warrant was executed in Medicine Hat, where a 2005 GMC Sierra RCMP allege was involved in the incident was seized.

RCMP responded on July 8 just after 9 p.m. after a motorist found a cyclist suffering from injuries on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway east of Medicine Hat. The cyclist was allegedly hit by a vehicle, which did not stop at the scene.

The cyclist was airlifted to Calgary hospital in life-threatening condition. RCMP say the cyclist’s condition remains unchanged.

An arrest occurred on Sunday, and a name could not be released until a charge was officially sworn in court.

Leger has been released from custody and appears in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on August 7.
