Wilson-Raybould, Philpott booted from Liberal caucus

OTTAWA, ONT. — Jody Wilson-Raybould says she has been removed from the Liberal Party caucus.

In a Tweet sent Tuesday afternoon, Wilson-Raybould wrote “I have just been informed by the Prime Minister of Canada that I am removed from the Liberal caucus and as the confirmed Vancouver Granville candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada in the 2019 federal election. More to come…”

In a media availability Tuesday afternoon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed Wilson-Raybould, as well as former Treasury Board President Jane Philpott, were both removed from caucus.

Wilson-Raybould served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from 2015 until she was moved to the post of Minister of Veterans Affairs earlier this year. She resigned from cabinet in February 2019.

Wilson-Raybould is also a key figure in the ongoing SNC-Lavalin affair, where she alleges the Prime Minister’s Office put pressure on her to intervene in a criminal prosecution case against Quebec company SNC-Lavalin. She alleges the move to Veterans Affairs was punishment for refusing to intervene in the case.

Philpott resigned from her post on March 4, saying in a statement she had “lost confidence in how the government has dealt with this matter and in how it has responded to the issues raised.”
