Vikings looking towards senior leadership

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Two days into the Crescent Heights Vikings training camp, Dustin Ressler is already seeing the specific qualities he expects out of his football club.

“The effort level’s been really high,” said the Vikings head coach and offensive coordinator. “I’m really loving the leadership from our Grade 12’s and everybody’s giving it their all, all the time. It’s been fantastic so far.”

He says leadership will play a huge part in the success of the Vikings this year, but it won’t come easy.

More than 10 players from last year have graduated; a greater number than the seniors taking the front lines this year. But he’s impressed with what his returning players are bringing to the field.

“We lost some big roles, some big shoes to fill. But in saying that there’s always guys that are going to step up,” he added. “That’s the beauty of high school football. You find this kid over summer from Grade 11 to 12 that’s like ‘wow, where did he come from’. It’s fantastic, it’s really encouraging to find.”

Josh Keen is one of the few Ressler will lean on for leadership.

The lineman says although they have fewer Grade 12’s this year, they’re focusing on bringing more leader-like attributes to the turf.

“We’re all taking it very seriously, trying to help everyone move forward and get better everyday,” said Keen, noting he hopes to continue playing football following his high school graduation.

While many would expect a returning player to be a lock-in for a roster spot, Ressler says that’s not the case.

He says positions are available for anyone, regardless of whether they’re returning to the Blue and White, or trying to crack the roster for the first time.

“Every single spot, every single year is open,” Ressler continued. “So there are 12 spots on offence, 12 spots on defense, and every single special teams.

“Guys have to show up. Just because you’ve been here for three years doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to start. Your attitude and effort really dictates that.”

Vikings training camp continues Friday afternoon from 4:30 — 7:30 p.m. They’ll rest up on Saturday before picking up practice on Sunday in preparation for their first exhibition game in Airdrie against George McDougall High School on Friday.
