Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education to launch specialized elementary program

Oct 13, 2026 | 5:06 PM

The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is launching a specialized elementary program focused on structured learning, academic foundations and Catholic faith, with its first students expected to begin in fall 2027.

Catholic Cogito will be offered at École St. Mary’s School, being the first program of its kind in Southern Alberta, according to the school division.

The program is designed for students who thrive in consistent routines and structured learning environments, with an emphasis on teacher-led instruction, personal responsibility and independent learning skills.

Students will learn French as a second language and be required to wear uniforms.

The program will combine traditional learning methods with the Catholic faith and mission of the school division.

“This program gives families another choice within Medicine Hat and Catholic education, one that pairs a strong academic foundation with the structure, discipline and Catholic faith that shape the whole experience,” said Superintendent of Schools Dwayne Zarichny.

“We’re looking forward to seeing this program take root at École St. Mary’s and watching our students grow through it.”

École St. Mary’s Principal Edlyn Murphy said the program will help students develop confidence, independence and strong learning habits while growing in their Catholic faith.

“We are thrilled to be launching this new program with our students, staff and families,” said Murphy.

A parent information night is scheduled for Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at École St. Mary’s School for families interested in learning more about the program.

Parents can submit a registration of intent to help the division plan staffing.

Official registration is scheduled to open Feb. 1, 2027, and families will then be required to complete an assessment to determine whether the program is a suitable fit for the student and family.

There are no academic entrance requirements or additional program fees beyond the cost of the required uniform.

Admission will be based on whether the student and family are suited to the program’s structured learning environment and approach.

The first students are expected to begin Catholic Cogito in fall 2027.
