MEDICINE HAT, AB — Several local organizations will be running activities for Family Day on Monday.

The Family Leisure Centre will be open from noon-5 p.m. on Monday, with activities for people of all ages.

“We have a full compliment of activities,” said Terra Petryshyn, recreational program coordinator with the city. “We have skating and swimming of course, those are the old standby favourites. We’re running Nerf Wars, we are doing tot time in the gymnasium, as well as some jumbo yard games, because that’s always a really fun family activity in the summer time, so we thought we’d bring it inside in the winter here.”

Admission to the Family Leisure Centre on Monday is $2, with pass holders getting in free. Families can also make orange bracelets with the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.

Families will have to pick up time tickets for Nerf Wars, due to a limited amount of supplies. The activity will run at the top of every four for 45 minutes.

Petryshyn says last year, 2,500 people came through the doors of the Family Leisure Centre on Family Day, making it one of their busiest days. She adds it’s important for the centre to give families a place to be active.

“With the expansion of the Family Leisure Centre in the last three years, we’ve been able to really add something for everyone,” she said. “We want families to be able to celebrate all together, and have fun doing activities all together.”

For those willing to brave the elements over the weekend, there are also a number of activities available at Police Point Park.

The Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat is sponsoring Family Day Activities from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Families can roast hot dogs for a fee as well as purchase and build a bird house. The centre will also be offering free snowshoeing and cross country ski rentals.

“That hasn’t always been possible, because some Februarys, we don’t have snow,” said park interpreter Marty Drut. “This year and last year? We have plenty of snow to do that activity.”

Snowshoe and ski rentals will be available until 3 p.m.
