Top 5 things to do at the Medicine Hat Public Library in May

May 2, 2024 | 4:48 PM

The library is a wonderful place to find new books, but there’s more going on than just flipping through pages.

Here are the top five things to do at the Medicine Hat Public Library for April 2024.

MHPL Comic Con

May 4, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

MHPL Comic Con No. 1 happens on Star Wars Day – May The Fourth Be With You.

It’s all free and there will be something for people of all ages and for everyone from seasoned fans of the “geek-culture” world to those just discovering it and their inner geek.

A costume contest, Star Wars-themed activities, tea dueling, board games, a comics and publishing author talk, storytime with Spider-Man and much more will all be part of the day.

Spider-Man Storytime requires pre-registration.

Wellness Week

May 6-10

The library is putting the focus on mental wellness and mental health in the first full week of May.

At least one program happens each day including a Simple Connections Stronger Communities Workshop on May 6, DIY Self-Care Kits on May 8 and a discussion titled Strategies for Anxiety and Depression on May 10.

Pre-registration is required for some programs.

Community Coffee and Service Dogs

May 9, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

A special edition of Community Coffee will go to the dogs and welcome service dogs in training from Summit Service Dogs as part of Wellness Week. Our regular Community Coffees take place on Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Pecha Kucha – Medicine Hat – Vol. 31

May 16, 7 p.m.

The always popular Pecha Kucha series returns!

Members of the community will share their area of expertise and interest in a 20×20 format – 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide.

Too popular to hold in our theatre, this will take place in the Esplanade Main Theatre.

Spring Open Mic Community Showcase

May 24, 6:45 p.m.

Community members are invited to take centre stage at the library during an evening of music and spoken word performances.

The library has partnered with the Medicine Hat High Spoken Word Club for this fun showcase of local talent. To perform, registration is required before May 20.

The Medicine Hat Public Library will be closed May 20 for Victoria Day.
