Man in custody after evading MHPS

Jan 6, 2019 | 11:16 AM

Medicine Hat, AB – A Medicine Hat man is in custody after he chose not to stop while being pursued by members of the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) on Saturday.

Around 2:15 p.m, officers attempted to stop the man in his vehicle in the north flats.

The suspect was known to police, as he was on 2 driving bans through a Conditional Sentence Order from a conviction for flight/evading police and a second pre-trial order for prohibiting driving.

The man reacted to the attempted traffic stop by driving in a reckless manner to evade the marked police car.

Police decided to dis-engage with the vehicle to prevent pursuit and mitigate the risk of harm to the community.

Officers then found the vehicle abandoned shortly afterwards.

Members of the MHPS then attended the suspects home and located the male, where he refused to exit his home and threatened self-harm.

Police conducted a manual breach of the suspects door to prevent any self-harm and took him into custody without any further issues.

The unnamed suspect is now in police custody awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing for the following charges:

  • Flight from police
  • Dangerous driving
  • Breach of recognizance
  • Breach of a Conditional Sentence Order
  • Taking a motor vehicle without consent

The Alberta Health Services Mobile Crisis Team (AHS-CT) met with the suspect for assessment and professional referral.
