Golf courses taking wait and see approach to weather

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The snowfall Medicine Hat is receiving is causing headaches for several local golf courses.

CHAT Sports reached out to several courses in the city this morning to find out their feelings about the snow, and if they’re considering closing their courses early. For now, many are playing the waiting game right now, knowing weather can change.

Derek Berger with Connaught Golf Club said they’re hopeful the snow will melt over the next week. However, he adds the course is considering bumping up their closing date to earlier in the month.

Currently, the club, which opened late this year, has its closing date set for October 21st, and Berger says they’re not sure if it’s worth staying open if the weather doesn’t hold.

Desert Blume Golf Course is currently in a tough situation. The course will be playing host to the CCAA Golf Championships in two weeks, and Chris Paskin, executive professional at the course, says they aren’t sure about a backup plan yet if snow continues.

“We hope to get ‘er going,” he said. “We have a meeting tomorrow, so we’ll be discussing our contingency plan if things don’t go on certain days. But, the forecast itself wer’e looking at should be good, the snow should be gone in the next couple of days, we have plus temperatures coming,  and this little bit of wind, and hopefully it will melt pretty quick.”
