MEDICINE HAT, AB — A company charged following a 2015 death at CF Industries will be going to trial next year.

Aluma Systems Inc. appeared in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on Wednesday, where a trial was set to begin on February 4, 2019. The trial is scheduled to last until February 15.

The company was charged under the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act last year following a fatality on December 7, 2015.

Two workers were doing some work on an ammonia tank at CF Industries, when a mobile lift allegedly struck a valve on the tank, which released ammonia.

One worker, a 49-year-old man, died from his injuries. The second worker suffered minor injuries, but was released later that day.

Aluma Systems is facing two charges of failure to ensure the health and safety of workers. They are also facing charges of failure to take measures to eliminate or control a hazard, failure to ensure a hazard assessment was repeated when a work process or operation changed and failure to provide safeguards where a worker could accidentally, or through the work process, come into contact with a hazard.

The company has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
