MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat YMCA and SD76 have entered into a partnership for before and after school programming in the city.

In a news release sent on Thursday, the company announced it will be operating before and after school programming in 11 elementary schools.

“The YMCA of Medicine Hat is committed helping children and families thrive while promoting a healthy community. We are extremely excited and honoured to be chosen as the successful operator for the District’s Before & After School Program because it allows us to achieve our mission in the community in new ways,” says Sharon Hayward, YMCA of Medicine Hat CEO, in a statement. “We thank School District No. 76 for entrusting our charity with this responsibility.”

The YMCA currently offers early year child care services to 93 children at the John Millar Centre in Crestwood and the Crescent Heights Child Development Centre. The new partnership will create approximately 800 licensed child care spaces.

The new programs will be located at Connaught School, Crestwood School, Dr. Ken Sauer School, Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre, George Davison School, River Heights School, Ross Glen School, Southview Community School, Vincent Massey School, Webster Niblock School and Elm Street School.

Elm Street’s program will take place in the mornings, with no change to afternoon care.

In her statement, Hayward says the YMCA and SD76 will be working closely during the transition for all families who access the programs.
