Desert Spring Spa celebrated its growth and community support on Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Medicine Hat, bringing together local officials, business representatives and clients to mark a milestone for the wellness business.

The event, held on Oct. 22, gave guests a chance to tour the spa, meet staff and learn more about its services before the ribbon was cut.

Mayor Linnsie Clark, city councillors Cheryl Phaff, Dan Reynish and Yusuf Mohammed, along with representatives from the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce, attended.

Mohammed, as well as Minister for Primary and Preventative Health Services and Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright, also spoke at the event, recognizing the vision behind the business and its ties to the community.

Mohammed said he has worked with Marlies Wirzba for more than 20 years and praised her longstanding commitment to community building and empowering people through business.

Wirzba is involved in the ownership and development of EIWM Holdings, Camp Ice Cream and Desert Spring Spa.

Wright spoke about the lasting impact of Wirzba’s work and the importance of businesses that prioritize community connections and giving back.

For Desert Spring Spa manager Kirsty Kurpjuweit, the turnout was a reminder of the support the local business has received.

“I think it’s been an amazing day. We are so blessed to have such incredible clients and such a great community to come out and support this, our local business,” Kurpjuweit said.

She described the event as a fun opportunity to celebrate the business and the people behind it.

“And I’m just feeling very grateful and very happy. It was a great event. We had a lot of fun,” Kurpjuweit said.

Desert Spring Spa has been operating since May 2025, while Kurpjuweit took on the manager role in February 2026.

Since then, she said, the business has continued to grow with the help of its staff.

“We just have the most incredible staff that work here. And we’re just getting bigger and better as we go,” Kurpjuweit said.

Although Kurpjuweit prefers working behind the scenes, she said the ceremony gave her a chance to reflect on what the team has accomplished, adding that the business has more planned for the future.

“I’m pretty proud. It’s humbling; I am incredibly proud of what we’ve done here,” Kurpjuweit said.

“There’s a lot of exciting things coming.”

The spa’s focus is health and wellness, with an emphasis on ensuring clients leave feeling better than when they arrived.

“So we want people to come in [and] leave feeling lighter and feeling better than when you came in,” Kurpjuweit said.

She said the team’s expertise and professionalism are central to that approach.

“We have the most incredible staff that are so professional and so incredible at what they do,” Kurpjuweit said.

“You are going to feel amazing once you leave,” she added with a bit of laughter.

“And you’re going to either want to tell everyone about this spa or nobody, because you don’t want everyone to be booked up.”

The event wrapped up with the ribbon cutting, celebrating the business, its staff and the community that has supported it.
