The Brooks Bandits let a late lead slip away on home ice Saturday, dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to the Cowichan Valley Capitals in the first meeting between the two franchises.

The Bandits took a 3-2 lead late in the third period after scoring twice in a span of 40 seconds, but Cowichan Valley forced overtime with a goal in the final minute.

Carter Dekay tied the game with 57 seconds remaining, beating Brooks goaltender Emile Beaunoyer with a backhand shot after the Capitals pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.

Kole Keen scored the winner 2:11 into overtime, converting a shot from the high slot to give Cowichan Valley the victory.

Brooks opened the scoring early in the first period when Jeremy Leroux netted his fifth goal of the season on the Bandits’ only power play of the game.

The Capitals responded midway through the opening frame, with Gleb Semenko tying the contest.

Roan Burgess then scored on the power play in the second period to put Cowichan Valley ahead 2-1 heading into the third.

Alexandre Monarque and Mike Kucherawy scored just 40 seconds apart in the final frame to put the Bandits in front before the Capitals’ late comeback.

Cowichan Valley held a commanding 52-25 advantage in shots on goal, despite playing its fourth game in five days.

The loss drops Brooks to 5-3-2 this season. They remain winless in overtime now, with two losses.

With 12 points in the BCHL Interior East Division standings, the Bandits are now one point back of the Okotoks Oilers for first place.

The Bandits return to the Centennial Regional Arena on Friday. They will host the Vernon Vipers at 7 p.m.
